Port security has become an increasingly important priority for maritime and logistics authorities. In the Canary Islands, the Port of Las Palmas has recently strengthened its operational capabilities through specialized security units, underwater drones, advanced surveillance systems and new technologies designed to improve response times against threats such as smuggling, drug trafficking and maritime emergencies. Protecting critical infrastructure now requires constant monitoring and highly specialized resources.
Digital transformation is also reshaping port security. The implementation of drones, intelligent access control systems, real-time monitoring platforms and data analysis tools is helping ports improve prevention, risk detection and emergency response capabilities. These investments not only strengthen physical security but also enhance operational efficiency across increasingly interconnected maritime environments.
At the same time, cooperation between public administrations, security forces and port authorities has become a fundamental pillar of modern port protection strategies. Coordination between Port Police, Coast Guard services, emergency units and public agencies allows for faster and more effective responses to incidents involving hazardous cargo, maritime transport operations, rescue missions and critical infrastructure protection.
Ports are no longer just logistics platforms. They have become strategic hubs for international trade, territorial connectivity and economic security. As global risks continue to evolve, investment in technology, surveillance systems and operational resilience will remain essential to ensuring safer, smarter and more secure ports for the future.
