Although Asia remains the undisputed engine of global manufacturing, port traffic, and shipbuilding, it is European shipping companies that control the vessels that actually transport those goods. Consequently, Europe dominates the global container fleet capacity, with over 55% of the market in the hands of a small group of large operators. This concentration of ship ownership highlights an obvious reality: although physical goods are produced in the East, much of the logistical control is exercised from the West.
According to the latest tracking data from the Alphaliner portal, the analysis of these operators shows how the global container ship fleet capacity is geographically distributed. This makes it easy to identify the main players driving maritime trade on each continent.
Europe: more than 55% of global capacity
Europe accounts for 55.3% of the global market, despite having only five shipping companies among the top 30. This reflects an extraordinary concentration of power. Collectively, these companies have a fleet capacity of over 18.9 million TEUs. European shipping companies have historically pursued a strategy based on economies of scale and global alliances, which has allowed them to consolidate their position at the forefront of container shipping.
