The Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in collaboration with the Port Authority of Huelva are currently in the development phase of the feasibility study of the project ‘The Gateway: Green And Technological European Waterway’, an ambitious initiative aimed at creating a green corridor between the ports of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Huelva, whose objective is to promote the decarbonisation of maritime transport in Europe, fostering the transition towards a sustainable blue economy and reducing the carbon footprint.
This project, which has the collaboration of the Port Authority of Huelva, is part of the European Union’s mission ‘Restore our oceans and waters’, whose purpose is to protect and restore the health of marine ecosystems through research, innovation and investment in sustainable technologies, in addition to contributing to international commitments such as the Paris Agreement, the European Green Deal and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
The Tenerife-Huelva route, key to the connection between the Canary Islands and the Peninsula, will be the stage where innovative technologies and new generation fuels such as green hydrogen, ammonia, methanol and bioLNG will be implemented, in addition to the development of appropriate infrastructures for their supply that will boost local economies. ‘The Gateway’ includes a series of strategic actions, including the performance of a technological assessment with the aim of identifying and testing sustainable fuels suitable for operations on the Huelva-Tenerife route; the development of green infrastructures, which will allow the implementation of carbon-neutral fuel supply stations in both ports; and the development of an economic and legislative analysis, in which the costs, regulatory challenges and financing mechanisms necessary for its execution will be studied.
