The HUET (Helicopter Underwater Escape Training) course is essential training for people working in maritime environments, especially in the offshore industry. This course focuses on teaching participants the skills and techniques necessary to survive in the event of an emergency landing of a helicopter on the water and to perform a safe evacuation from the submerged aircraft.

The HUET course usually comprises the following aspects:

  • Theoretical training: Participants receive an introduction to helicopter and aircraft safety procedures prior to take-off. This includes instructions on the use of life jackets, seat belts and other safety equipment on board.
  • Evacuation from helicopter in water: Participants learn how to evacuate a helicopter that has landed in water. This may include opening doors or windows, unfastening seat belts and exiting the aircraft in an orderly manner.
  • Use of survival equipment: Participants are instructed on how to properly use survival equipment such as life jackets, immersion suits, and signalling devices.
  • Floatation techniques: Participants learn how to stay afloat in the water using proper techniques, including the fetal position and the distress position, which minimise heat loss and help conserve energy.
  • Rescue and mutual aid: Basic rescue and mutual aid skills are taught in the water to help other survivors in the event of an emergency landing.
  • Practical simulations: The course includes practical exercises in a pool or water tank, where participants experience simulated emergency situations, such as helicopter rollover and underwater evacuation.
  • In-flight safety procedures: In addition to evacuation techniques, the course may address safety and emergency response procedures while the helicopter is in flight.
Target group

The HUET (Helicopter Underwater Escape Training) course is aimed at a specific group of people working in offshore environments, particularly those who travel in helicopters to access oil rigs, gas platforms or undertake other offshore activities. The following are details of who this course is aimed at:

  1. Offshore industry staff: The HUET course is essential for workers in the offshore industry, such as oil rig operators, technicians, engineers, maintenance staff and other employees who rely on helicopters as a means of transport to and from offshore installations.
  2. Helicopter Crew: This course is relevant to helicopter crew who operate in offshore environments and are involved in transporting personnel to offshore platforms and other offshore installations. This includes pilots, co-pilots, flight attendants and support personnel on the aircraft.

Requirements

Medical clearance certifying that the individual is in good health. This recognition must be current prior to commencement of the course.

Classroom. It can be either:

Stand-alone module or integrated module: You can take this course as a stand-alone training (separate module) or combined with the OPITO BOSIET course, depending on your needs and objectives.

Qualification

OPITO certification valid for four years which must subsequently continue to be updated before expiry.
