There was a sharp increase in incidents of piracy and armed robbery against merchant vessels in the first quarter of 2025, according to the latest report from the International Maritime Bureau (IMB). Between January and March, 45 attacks were reported worldwide, an increase of nearly 35% compared to the 33 cases recorded in the same period in 2024. According to the report, in the first three months of 2025, a total of 37 vessels were boarded, four were hijacked, and four more attacks were attempted.
The number of hostages and kidnappings has almost doubled compared to 2024, when 35 hostages and nine kidnappings were reported in the first three months of the year. The main focus of concern is the Singapore Strait, where there has been an unprecedented increase: 27 incidents compared to just seven in the first quarter of 2024. IMB Director Michael Howlett has urged strengthened protection of seafarers. “The increase in incidents in the Singapore Strait highlights the urgent need to protect the safety of seafarers navigating these waters,” Howlett commented.
