OUR START

Grupo Stier:

Founded in 1994 under the name “Stier & Co”, the Group played an active role as P&I Correspondents and maritime experts with services in all of the Canary Islands. Today, “Grupo Stier” represents the majority of the International Group P&I Clubs as well as several International Associations and Insurance Companies.

CEMA

Center for Maritime Studies of the Atlantic

In response to the demands and needs of the local market, and as a result of our dynamic maritime activity the Centre for Maritime studies in the Atlantic (CEMA) was created. From 1994 until CEMA´s merger into Grupo Stier in 2015, more tan 2,500 international students have been trained. This training continues today at the Stier Training Centre in Gran Canaria.

Stier Shipagency was founded in 1998 to consolidate the position of Stier & Co by providing legal strength to the activity of P&I Correspondents in Spain and to complement the service offering and better attend client´s requests.

Stier Shipagency, along with CEMA, now form part of Grupo Stier which is a family business formed by hard work, and working to train future generations. Grupo Stier is the affirmation of our business maturity, comprised of highly qualified multilingual professionals:

Lawyers, Captains of the Spanish Merchant Marine, Inspectors, Engineers, Academic Coordinators, Instructors, and Administrative and External Advisors.

Languages spoken include: Spanish, English, French, Italian, German, Korean, Japanese and Arabic

Canary Islands

The ports in the Canary Islands offer multipurpose services and state-of-the-art facilities. They serve as a base for the national and international fishing fleet, offer a wide range of services to the oil industry, are stations for the supply of fuel, and act as a hub for the transshipment of containers. Furthermore, the ports are leaders in the cruise sector, and offer a strategic location ideal for the distribution of humanitarian aid.

Geographical location

Geographically, the archipelago is located in the Atlantic Ocean, northwest of the African coast, north of the Tropic of Cancer between the coordinates 27º 37′ and 29º 25′ north latitude, 13º 20′ and 18º 10′ west longitude. Located a little over 1000 km from the Iberian Peninsula and almost 100 km from Africa, the Canary Islands occupy a strategic enclave in the Atlantic Ocean between three continents: Europe, Africa and America.

Administrative Division

Administratively, the archipelago is divided into two provinces: Santa Cruz de Tenerife which includes the islands of Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro. Las Palmas which includes the islands of Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.

Port of Las Palmas

The city has always been port-oriented, thanks to its strategic location it has been consolidated as a first-class logistics hub with more than thirty shipping lines connecting Las Palmas to over 180 ports across the globe. The Port of La Luz, in Gran Canaria, is the largest in the Canarian archipelago and one of the most important merchandise distribution nexuses in Spain. It currently has 16 kilometers of berthing lines distributed over several docks, with drafts ranging between 3 and 45 meters deep.
