The IMO International Day for Women in Maritime

International Women's Day

The IMO International Day for Women in Maritime is observed on 18 May every year since 2021. The day celebrates women in the industry and is intended to promote the employment of women in the maritime, usually considered a male sector.  IMO Event is organised each year and others in the maritime, are invited to promote and celebrate in support to address the current gender imbalance in maritime. 

On 18 May 2023, a major international event took place at IMO Headquarters (London): ”Training-Visibility-Recognition Towards a Barrier-Free Working Environment for Women in the Maritime Sector”. Although attendees participated virtually, they were able to enjoy the Opening Remarks by Mr. Kitack Lim (Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization) and the skill of Moderator Ms. Azara Prempeh (Director of the Administrative Division and Chief of Staff of IMO). In the second part of the programme, vital issues such as training, recognition and visibility of women in the world of work were discussed.

Same day in the Canaries, ASOCELPA (Las Palmas Ship Agents & Stevedores Association) paid tribute with an interview to our Founder Mrs. Ida Stier to remember her beginnings in 1978 in the maritime sector and her long career in the market where she is still active.

Guided by Diario Santa Cruz Mi Puerto Journalist, Mrs. Ida Stier shared her views and opinions throughout an interview commemorating her experience and concerns over time, emphasizing her vision regarding the new opportunities that the current and future market offers in the Canary Islands.
