The Directorate General of Merchant Marine and Maritime Rescue reinforces its preventive message through the “LaLeyDelMar” campaign, aimed at skippers, crew members, owners, charterers, and guests on board. The objective is clear: to ensure safe navigation in recreational boating by pre-checking all essential vessel systems.
Under the slogan “Myths that leak,” the campaign emphasizes that carelessness, no matter how seemingly insignificant, can lead to dangerous situations. Pay attention to #LaLeyDelMar: it reminds users of the need to check navigation, steering, and propulsion equipment, including the compass, log, rudder, radar, oil and coolant levels, as well as the condition of horns, filters, and spark plugs.
It is equally essential to check the watertightness of the hull and bilge systems, paying special attention to the bottom valves, bilges, toilets, sinks, portlights, and hatches. Any failure in these elements can compromise the structural safety of the vessel.
Regarding anchoring, ensure proper stowage of the anchor, verify the absence of corrosion on the lines, and check the operation of the windlass brake. It is also recommended to check the condition of the batteries and power outlets, checking their charge level, the cleanliness of the terminals, any corrosion, the functioning of the charger, and the integrity of the connections.
Regarding electrical equipment, the need to inspect navigation lights is emphasized, ensuring they are tight and their terminals are in good condition. It is also essential to have flashlights and spare batteries readily accessible at all times.
Each crew member must have a functioning life jacket, appropriate for their size and in good condition. Children’s models are required for minors. Please check that the jacket includes a whistle, reflective tape, and securing straps, and is marked with the vessel’s name. Safety harnesses are also recommended if travel conditions require them.
