The various consulting firms in the sector, which generally disagree, are telling us this time, with similar figures, that the global container fleet will reach a capacity of 32.5 million TEUs by the end of 2025, representing annual growth of 7% compared to 2024. To put this figure into perspective, we must consider that in 2024, compared to 2023, growth was 10%, and that growth expectations for 2026 are between 3.5% and 4%. Therefore, both 2025 and 2026 are years of slowdown in terms of growth in the capacity of the global container ship fleet.
However, we are witnessing a boom in orders, and looking once again at the figures provided by consultants, it turns out that the order book to date, and after the construction orders from Cosco and Hapag Lloyd a few days ago, which we have reported on extensively in NAUCHERglobal, the total number of container ships ordered in 2025 – which will most likely be delivered between 2027 and 2028 – is no less than 633 vessels with a capacity of 5.08 million TEUs, a figure that surpasses the orders of the ‘boom years’ (4.74 million in 2021, for example).
