Holy Week does not only transform streets and cities; in many coastal areas, it is also deeply connected to maritime and port identity.
A real example can be found in Valencia, where the Semana Santa Marinera is part of the history and culture of the waterfront. The Port Authority of Valencia’s own documentation reflects this connection, alongside other traditional celebrations linked to the port, such as the San Cristóbal procession at the Port of Valencia and the Virgin of Carmen festivities.
In the Bay of Algeciras, there are also institutional references to the participation of the Port Police in Holy Week processions, showing that a port is not only a logistics hub, but also a space closely tied to its community, traditions, and collective memory.
This connection highlights an important idea: port activity moves cargo, passengers, and industry, but it also coexists with local culture, heritage, and the celebrations that shape the identity of port cities.
In the maritime-port sector, talking about efficiency and infrastructure also means talking about integration with the city and its history.
