28 January marks European Data Protection Day, a key moment to reflect on the importance of privacy and responsible data management across all industries — including the maritime sector, where operational and personal data are increasingly critical.
Shipowners, port operators, managers, brokers and P&I Clubs handle sensitive data on a daily basis: crew information, passenger records, cargo details, claims, contracts and operational communications. Protecting this data is not only a legal obligation under the GDPR, but a cornerstone of trust and business continuity.
As the maritime industry accelerates its digital transformation — from fleet management systems to incident reporting, cybersecurity tools and insurance platforms — the risk landscape continues to expand. A data protection breach can have operational, reputational and financial consequences, including regulatory penalties and insurance exposure.
From a maritime safety and P&I perspective, strong data governance is an integral part of risk management. Clear policies, crew and shore-staff training, and robust cybersecurity controls are now as essential as traditional safety measures.
European Data Protection Day is an opportunity for the maritime industry to reaffirm its commitment to data protection, digital resilience and corporate responsibility, key pillars for a sector that is increasingly connected and regulated.
