The mandatory notification of containers lost at sea is now in effect

Maritime safety and P&I risk management continue to advance as new international obligations take effect to enhance life-at-sea protection and industry coordination. As of 1 January 2026, a mandatory requirement to report all containers lost at sea has entered into force under recent amendments to the IMO’s SOLAS Convention.

This development marks a significant improvement for the shipping industry, standardizing and ensuring the mandatory reporting of containers going overboard — a process that was previously governed by inconsistent practices across flag States and operators.

From a P&I insurance perspective, increased transparency in reporting strengthens response capability to incidents, liability management, and coordination with maritime authorities and insurers, helping to reduce uncertainty and enable more effective action.

Furthermore, the new requirement elevates maritime and environmental safety standards by allowing timely alerts to nearby vessels and coastal authorities about potential hazards in commercial shipping lanes.

As industry professionals, staying informed about regulatory changes that directly impact operations and risk management with our P&I Clubs and international bodies is essential.
