Second-hand container ship prices grow 17% year-on-year despite falling freight rates

The average price per TEU for a five-year seven-ship order was $9,761/TEU at the end of August 2024. Since then, the price has increased to $10,758/TEU at the beginning of 2025 and $11,413/TEU at the end of August. Feeder vessels under 3,000 TEU have seen the largest price increase, averaging 26% year-over-year. “Despite significantly lower freight rates, the average price for five-year container ships has increased by 17% year-over-year and by 6% since the beginning of 2025,” says Niels Rasmussen, chief shipping analyst at Bimco.

According to the Shanghai Shipping Exchange, spot container freight rates for Shanghai exports have fallen 51% since the end of August 2024 and 42% since the beginning of 2025. Average freight rates for Chinese exports have also fallen 41% year-over-year and 25% since the beginning of this year, Rasmussen says. Global average freight rates have performed better but are still depressed, as market volumes have failed to keep pace with the average fleet growth so far this year of 8.7% year-over-year.

While freight rates have not supported the price of secondhand vessels, time charter rates have. Similar to prices for five-year-old vessels, time charter rates for a period of 6 to 12 months have increased 17% year-over-year and 9% year-to-date. Meanwhile, prices for newbuild container vessels have fallen 4% both year-over-year and year-to-date.
