Offshore wind fever in Galicia: nearly 11 GW of projects await development on its Coasts

Galicia has unleashed a fever for installing offshore wind on its coasts. With a total of 15 projects submitted to the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO), which collectively amount to 10,649 megawatts (MW), the Autonomous Community is poised to experience an energy infrastructure ‘boom’ that promises to transform the landscape and energy system of the region and the country.

Among the promoters of these ambitious projects are some of the leading companies in the energy sector, both national and international. Notable names such as Repsol, Iberdrola, Capital Energy, Bluefloat together with Sener, Cobra, Ferrovial, Abei Energy, Iberblue Wind with Amper and Invenergy are on the list of those leading this energy revolution in Galicia.

Objectives
The development of these projects is aligned with the ambitious goals set out in the Offshore Wind and Marine Energy Roadmap, as well as the updated National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan 2023-2030. By 2030, the aim is to reach up to 3 GW of offshore wind energy and 60 MW of other marine renewable sources. This advancement will not only increase the country’s energy capacity but will also focus on sustainable practices and harmonization with other marine uses and activities.
